How to compare electricity rates

by Donny on January 12, 2011

The concept of being able to choose an electric company is a new one, which is probably why the act of comparing different companies can be looked at as an art.

It’s kind of like comparing apples and oranges.

Techniques used by these electric companies could also be considered an art, although not always ethical.

When shopping around for electricity, you’ll see different rates listed that are not necessary consistent.

They have ways of throwing in hidden charges like “convenient fees”, or “bundling fees” and other charges that seem pretty nonsense, and sometimes, you may not be signing up for the cheapest electricity when it seems like you might be.

Such acts might be unethically wrong, but they’re not necessary illegal, which is why it’s important to be extra cautious. If a consumer has proof that the electricity company intentionally misleads its customers, it can be taken to court, but it’s not an easy thing to prove.

However, not all businesses are run like that, but before anything, it’s best to look for a fixed rate instead of a variable rate for your residential home because it’s more consistent.

With the companies making things as confusing as humanly possible, we want to help clear the air a little bit.

By using our compare box, you can shop, compare and choose the best electricity rates in your deregulated area.

After you enter your zip code, hit “Compare” and you’ll see information about electricity suppliers and their rates that are offered in your area, with no hidden fees.

Again, keep in mind that if you select fixed rates, they will be compared with other fixed rates, and variable rates will be compared with other variable rates.

If you select a variable rate, it will be harder for the consumer to know what to expect from month to month, whereas, with a fixed rate, what you see one month is what you will get the next month.

One other thing to remember is to choose “commercial” if it’s for your business and “residential” if it’s for your home.
