The town was founded in 1855 when the Illinois Central Railroad laid its track about two miles west of downtown.
For its first five years, its name was West Urbana until it acquired a city charter in 1960 and was given its current name.
Champaign also serves as home to University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
